Various Mutts of Madhwas & their significance

Uttaradimath Shri Raghavendra mutt & Udupi eight mutts.


Madhwacharya established 8 Mathas in Udupi to look after the Krishna mandir. Madhwacharya got a Krishna Moorthy (IDOL) in a ship near the shore in Udupi, which he established a temple in Udupi and established the Krishna Moothy.
He passed on various idols with him to evry of his students (Shishya varga) and told them to do the pooja of those idols & also inturn do thepooja of shri krishna idol established in the temple in a series of rotation on every two year basis (PARYAYA SAMARAMBA).

He also established another mattha to do pooja of MOOLA RAMA DEVARU which was subsequently splitted into two mathas namely UTTARADIMATH & RAGHAVENDRA MUTT (or SHRI MUTT). Click on the link for details.

VARIOUS MUTTS LIST:-

1. UTTARADIMATH:- (श्री उत्तरादिमठ) is a Dvaita matha based in southern India. It is one of the original seats of Jagad-guru Sri Madhvacarya and thus belongs to the Madhva sampradaya.

2. Shri Raghavendra Matha (also Raghavendra Swamy Mutt or Sri Rayaru Matha) is a Dvaita matha based in Mantralayam, India. It is one of the original seats of Jagadguru Sri Madhvacharya and thus belongs to the Madhva sampradaya.

Eight UDUPI MUTS:-

1.  Pejavara Mutt:- Pejavara, is a small village in Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka, India. Vittala Devara Murthy is the main worshipping idol of this Mutt which is given by shri Madhwacharya.

2. Palimaru Mutt:- Palimaru is a small village near Udupi. 

3. Krishnapura Mutt:-  Krishnapura is a small village near Surathkal in DK district, Karnataka, India.

4. Adamaru Mutt:-  Shri Narasimha teertha, disciple of Shri Madhwacharya, was the first yati head of Shri Admaru mutt. Shri Madhwacharya gave Shri Chaturbhuja Kaliya mardana Krishna idol to Shri Narasimhateertha for worship.
5. Kaaniyooru Mutt:-  Shri Rama Theertha, the first pontiff of Kaniyooru Matha was given with idol of Shri Yoganarasimha, which is being worshipped with atmost respect and divotion as the main deity of Kaniyooru matha. In addition to this, another Narasimha idol known as “Karala Narasimha”, worshipped by Shri Madhwacharya and given to Trivikrama Pandithaacharya which later came to Shri Kaniyooru matha is also being worshipped as “Pattada devaru” in Kaniyooru Matha. Apart from these two main deities, Garudavaahana Lakshminarasimha and Acharya Madhwa kararchita Shri Gopalakrishna idols are being worshipped as “Pattada devaru”. Along with these deities known as “Pattada Devaru”, Shri Vedavyasa, Shri Vittala, Shri Ramachandra, Shri Kadagolu Krishna, are also being worshipped.

6.  Shirur Mutt:- Shiruru, is a small village near UDUPI.

7. Sodhe Mutt:-  VAADIRAJA SWAMY WAS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS YATHI OF THIS MUTT. SONDA IS A SMALL TOWN IN KARNATAKA INDIA.

8. Palimaru Mutt:-  Palimaru is a small village near UDUPI.
